Irene Hannon: Buried Secrets

By Kelly Bridgewater

Back Cover Copy:

After seven years as a Chicago homicide detective, Lisa Grant has hit a wall. Ready for a kinder, gentler life, she takes a job as a small-town police chief. But the discovery of a human skeleton by a construction crew at the edge of town taxes the resources of her department. A call for assistance brings detective Mac McGregor, an ex-Navy SEAL, to her doorstep. As they work to solve the mystery behind the unmarked grave, danger begins to shadow them. Someone doesn't want this dead person telling any tales--and will stop at nothing to make certain a life-shattering secret stays buried.

Master storyteller Irene Hannon is back with an exciting new series featuring former Special Forces operatives now in the thick of the action in civilian life. Hannon is at the top of her game in this can't-put-it-down thriller that will have readers up until the wee hours devouring every page.

My Review:

I have read every single one of Irene Hannon’s romantic suspense books and have loved every single one of them. About six months ago, Hannon, on her Facebook page, revealed the cover to Buried Secrets with the synopsis. I was hooked. I loved the cover. All the greens and the shovel, digging something in the dirt. It grabbed my attention, and I couldn’t wait for the book to be released. It was a long wait. But I’m glad to finally have my hands on a copy.

The prologue sets the tone for the action, allowing me to understand something bad occurred to set the plot in motion. In the first couple of chapters, Lisa and Mac, the heroine and hero, meet and discuss the issue with the found body. The story started strong, then it lingered a while to set up the blooming relationship between Lisa and Mac about a hundred or so pages. While the romantic tension is important to a romantic suspense, the story left the idea of the uncovered body for a while. Finally, it jumped into the premise of hunting for the owner and killer of the dead body. I felt it was great from then.

Lisa and Mac were characters who had a blooming relationship. From the first encounter in the first chapter, Lisa and Mac hit it off and nothing stood in their way. I never once feared that their relationship would not happen. Mac is the type of guy who goes out of his way to make Lisa comfortable and receives a complimentary smile from me. On the other hand, Lisa acts like a normal woman in love for the first time. Hannon allows me to peek in on Lisa and Mac’s train of thoughts about each other.

As for the killer’s identity, it is known pretty early in the story who the killer is. Personally, I would have liked to discover who the killer is instead of being told. The story is suspenseful in the form that I had to watch the killer squirm and held my breath as I watched her ruin others’ lives, praying for sweet justice. The final confrontation between Lisa and the killer is satisfying and memorable.

Overall, Irene Hannon’s latest romantic suspense, Buried Secrets, is a slow starting mystery, but it allows me to hold my breath and kept me interested as I watched the villain squirm and try to flee the impossible.

I received a complimentary copy of Irene Hannon’s Buried Secrets from Revell Publishing and the opinions stated are all my own.

DiAnn Mills: Double Cross

By Kelly Bridgewater

Back Cover Copy:

FBI Agent Laurel Evertson’s investigation into a scam targeting the elderly takes an unexpected twist when key evidence leads her to Morton Wilmington, a felon she arrested five years ago on her first undercover assignment. That case has haunted her since, and though she’s vowed to forget Wilmington—and what she sacrificed to put him away—he is now her best lead.

Houston Police Officer Daniel Hilton fears his grandparents may be the scammer’s next targets, and he’ll do anything to protect his family—even force interagency cooperation. But he’s quickly drawn to Laurel’s empathy and zeal and agrees to follow her lead . . . even if it means teaming up with a felon.

As the unlikely trio uncovers evidence suggesting the scam is more extensive and deadly than they imagined, both Laurel and Daniel find themselves in the crosshairs of a killer. Together they must decide if they can trust Wilmington’s claims of redemption, or if he’s leading them straight into a double cross.

My Review:

Of course as you all know by now romantic suspense, mysteries, and suspense are my genre of choice. I enjoy reading DiAnn Mills’ romantic suspense books. I even met her last year in St. Louis at the ACFW conference where she critiqued my first chapter of my book and gave me valuable input on how to make my first chapter sing. If your curious, I did review Mills’ previous book in the FBI: Houston series. Here is the link!

As for Double Cross, the characters of Laurel and Daniel make or break the story. Laurel, the heroine, goes back undercover to try to stop an elderly scam. Mills did a great job at showing the physical, emotional, and romantic tension inside Laurel, so the readers can empathize with her dilemmas. Laurel is a brave and confident woman, looking to be loved. The hero, Daniel, knows who he is God and wants Laurel to feel the same confidence and joy he has. You’ll have a hard time not falling in love with Daniel who will stop at nothing to protect his aging grandparents and Laurel. Chivalry definitely isn’t dead in Daniel.

As for the conflict, it starts within the first chapter and move along. There were moments in the middle of the story where I felt the action could have hurried along, but for the most part, Mills does a good job at throwing obstacles in Laurel and Daniel’s way. As for the romantic tension, Laurel and Daniel have to hide their true feelings for each other as they both work undercover, trying to figure out who is scamming the elderly.

There is nothing in the story that younger readers would close their eyes from. The story is moving with a bad guy that I did not see coming. I highly recommend this book to fans of Lynette Eason, Brandilyn Collins, Janice Cantore, or anyone else in this type of romantic suspense genre involving police work.

I received a digital review copy of Double Cross by DiAnn Mills from Tyndale House and all the opinions stated above are my own.

Christy Barritt: Hidden Agenda

By Kelly Bridgewater

Back Cover Copy:
Trusting the wrong person had gotten his father killed. CIA agent Ed Carter isn't about to repeat the mistake. Pulling a gun on nurse Bailey Williams may not have been the smartest idea, but the beautiful caretaker is Ed's only suspect in the murder. Problem is, her vulnerable brown eyes claim innocence and set off his protective instincts. The spark between them is undeniable, but Bailey could never trust her life—or her heart—to a man who thinks her guilty. But when the real killer returns and threatens not just her but her family, Bailey must place her faith in the only man who can keep them from being silenced forever…

My Review:

If you have followed my blog for a while, then you already know that Christy Barritt is one of my favorite romantic suspense and mystery writers. I have loved everything she writes, so be prepared to hear me gush about her latest Love Inspired Suspense book, Hidden Agenda. If you don’t have a copy, I would recommend going to buy one.

Hidden Agenda has everything I love about romantic suspense, nail-biting tension, bullets flying, the characters running for their lives all while trying to not fall in love with the person right next to them. Which we know, doesn’t happen. I love a good spy story, and this story lives up to its genre.

As true to the mystery and suspense field, Barritt does a great job at allowing her characters to face an evil that is hiding in the wings. This time Barritt throws in a twist, which I really enjoyed. (Don’t worry. I won’t tell. You have to buy the book and discover it for yourself.) The characters of Ed and Bailey are brave and intuitive. Both of them know that the other person is not telling the complete truth, but they can’t seem to drag the information out without bringing harm to the other.  I loved watching Ed and Bailey hunt for clues while the villain was shooting at them, blowing up their boat, and trashing Mr. Carter’s house. The romance was not even rushed, which sometimes I find happens a lot in stories that feature romance. It was slow and took time to develop. Nice touch. The edge of your seat suspense will keep readers guessing until the last page, leaving a good taste in the reader’s mouth.

Overall, Christy Barritt’s book, Hidden Agenda, is a great, quick read filled with twists and turns and remarkable, brave characters who invite the readers along for the characters’ journey of self-discovery.

I received an ARC from Christy Barritt in exchange for an honest opinion.

Christy Barritt’s Bio:
Christy writes both mystery and romantic suspense novels that are clean with underlying messages of faith. Her books have won the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Suspense and Mystery, have been twice nominated for the Romantic Times' Reviewers' Choice Award, and have finaled for both a Carol Award and Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year.

She's married to her Prince Charming, a man who thinks she's hilarious--but only when she's not trying to be. Christy's a self-proclaimed klutz, an avid music lover who's known for spontaneously bursting into song, and a road trip aficionado.

When she's not working or spending time with her family, she enjoys singing, playing the guitar, and exploring small, unsuspecting towns where people have no idea how accident prone she is.

Christy is most well-known for her Love Inspired Suspense novels, as well as her Squeaky Clean Mystery series. She currently has 23 books published.

Candace Calvert: By Your Side

By Kelly Bridgewater

Back Cover Copy:

ER nurse Macy Wynn learned essential, gritty lessons in the California foster care system: land on your feet and trust no one. She’s finally located the fellow foster child she loves like a sister, but the girl’s in deep trouble. Macy’s determined to help, no matter what it takes. Her motto is to “make it happen” in any situation life throws at her—even when she butts heads with an idealistic cop.

Deputy Fletcher Holt believes in a higher plan, the fair outcome—and his ability to handle that by himself if necessary. Now he’s been yanked from Houston, his mother is battling cancer, and he’s attracted to a strong-willed nurse who could be the target of a brutal sniper.

When everything goes wrong, where do they put their trust?

My Review:

I like romantic suspense, and I’m a huge fan of the television show ER. I own every episode. I have heard of Candace Calvert, but I haven’t gotten around to reading any of her books yet. When Tyndale offered it for review, I jumped on the chase. It would make me sit down and read one of her books without buying it and sicking it next to other books on my To Be Read pile. I truly enjoyed the book.

Calvert shows the inner workings of an Emergency Room, and I enjoy writers who use their day-to-day work to show their readers something new. It was realistic without boring the readers with all the head knowledge a nurse has to have. It flowed naturally.

You can’t help falling in love with Deputy Fletcher Holt. He is a good guy who wants to help his mother with cancer. They both drop everything in Houston and move to California to seek help. Fletcher even goes so far as to find out if he is a bone marrow match to his mother. What girl would not like a man that does everything in his power to make his mother comfortable? Also, loved how Fletcher went out of his way to find what makes Nurse Marcy Wynn tick. He was charming, sweet, and memorable. I enjoyed the hero of Fletcher Holt. On the other hand, ER nurse Marcy Wynn is a strong, kickboxing woman who wants the best for her sister, Leah, and wants a place to call home.

As for the suspense, it was interesting to see how a sniper kept targeting a certain area of town. It made me think a number of different times who the killer actually was. When I thought I knew who it could possibly be, Calvert threw another wretch in the mess and proved me wrong.

I will definitely be keeping a lookout for the other six books that Candace Calvert has written. These are good books for fans of Jordyn Redwood and Bethany Macmanus.

Overall, Candace Calvert’s latest release, By Your Side, grips my imagination with the realistic workings of the emergency room and the suspense of the sniper. The hero of Fletcher Holt is swoon-worthy and totally likeable. Marcy Wynn is a strong, confident woman looking for her home.

I received a complimentary copy of By Your Side by Candace Calvert through Tyndale Publishing and all the opinions stated above are all my own.

Candace Calvert’s Bio:

Often called the author of "medical hope opera," Candace Calvert is an ER nurse who landed on the other side of the stethoscope after the equestrian accident that broke her neck and convinced her love, laughter--and faith--are the very best medicines of all.

Her popular medical drama series (Mercy Hospital and Grace Medical) offer readers a chance to "scrub in" on the exciting world of emergency medicine, along with charismatic characters, pulse-pounding action, tender romance, humor, suspense--and an encouraging prescription for hope. Think "Grey's Anatomy finds its soul"!

A native northern Californian, mother of two and proud grandmother to seven, Candace is a passionate "foodie," equally at home with a whisk in her hand as she is penning stories.
