Michelle Sass Aleckson: Right Here Waiting

By Kelly Bridgewater

He lives in a world of winter.

Sled dog musher and outdoor adventurer Nick Dahlquist doesn’t mean to be a loner—he just feels at home in the woods, with his dogs, and also online in his vlogging world, where he’s amassed nearly a million viewers. But he’s just a simple guy, with simple goals—care for his dogs, teach people how to survive the cold, and run the Iditarod. Unfortunately, life turns cold when his lead dog is injured, and he’s low on funds. Good thing he has LadyJHawk to chat with. She’s become an online friend he can turn to, and he’s starting to need her more than he’d like to admit. But the last thing he wants is for some random woman to show up on his doorstep…

She doesn’t belong in his world.

Chopper pilot and Texas gal Jae Lynn Washington has been following Nick’s DogQuest videos and Get Lost in the Woods vlogs since she inherited her deceased boyfriend’s military working dog. Three years later, his encouragement and help as online chat buddies have made her wonder if he could be more than a friend. What if she moved to Deep Haven? Would that be considered stalking, even if she had a bonafide job on the Crisis Response Team?

But she’s determined to try…

When Jae shows up in Deep Haven—and on Nick’s doorstep—he’s not at all the man she met online. The last thing she’ll do is tell him she’s really LadyJHawk. And when Nick is tapped to train the Crisis Response Team, he’s pretty sure that petite, summer-loving Jae won’t last a moment in the brutal cold—a fear he pours out to LadyJHawk. As their training takes a personal turn, their chilly start begins to thaw. But is he ready to shake off his online relationship for the one in real life? And if Jae tells him the truth, will it spook him back into the woods?

When a blizzard strikes, and the CRT is called out into the storm, it might be too late…

Cozy up to this delightful, wintery twist on You’ve Got Mail set in the snowy escape of Deep Haven.

My Thoughts:

Right Here Waiting by Michelle Sass Aleckson was my favorite book of the new Deep Haven series co-authored by Deep Haven Creator Susan May Warren. Maybe it is because it features puppies. Maybe it is because it features snow. Maybe it is because it features a dangerous rescue. The plot does focus a lot of romance with hints of the rescue. This is a contemporary romance, so I understood that going into the novel. As for fitting into the genre type, it does feature just what romance fans want. A romance. Sparks fly. A little disagreement. More romance. Misunderstanding. Then the happily-ever-after. Even though contemporary romance are not my go-to genre, I do enjoy a good story set in the middle of nowhere with tons of snow. Plus, I love how Deep Haven is located in northern Minnesota. Hockey country. I LOVE hockey and watch my team, the Colorado Avalanche play whenever they are on tv. Overall, Right Here Waiting by Michelle Sass Aleckson is a delightful love story in the frozen north. Fans will be happy to see characters that familiar and known to fill the page of the stories.

Michelle Sass Aleckson: Crazy for You

 By Kelly Bridgewater

She’s doesn’t want any trouble…

Former soldier Veronica “Ronnie” Morales isn’t going to let her kid brother, Tiago, get pulled into the gangs of Minneapolis, so, seeking safety and a fresh start, she heads to sleepy Deep Haven on the north shore of Minnesota. She’s hoping to put down roots as the paramedic for the new Crisis Response Team, but it’s not easy to be the outsider.

He can’t seem to escape it…

It’s also not easy being the guy related to everyone in town. Especially when you’re the holdout vote for a landmark project. Fire Chief Peter Dahlquist might be the loneliest guy in town when both sides of his massive family—the Hatfields and McCoys of Deep Haven—demand that he pick sides. The only one who seems to understand is the newcomer in town…his new, albeit street-tough paramedic.

Can trouble bring them together?

When Tiago finds himself caught up in small town shenanigans and the town blames Ronnie for tragedy, Peter is forced to pick sides. But this choice just might cost him the home—and the woman—he loves.

My Thoughts:

Boy, do I love returning to Deep Haven! The Christiansen is one of my favorite literary families, so I love when I can see how they are doing. With Crazy for You by Michelle Sass Aleckson, she has definitely written in the same vein of Susan May Warren and said true to the world. The tension between Peter and Ronnie were set on fire. First, emotionally. One of my pet peeves, which also sometimes turns me away from contemporary romance is the fast emotions and love that occurs really rapidly in the beginning of this genre. Crazy for you is no exception. After the first argument and pushing of Ronnie and Peter's limits, they start to fall in love with each other. I enjoy seeing Ronnie and all her struggles, Aleckson did a fabulous job at crafting a character with a realistic background that allowed those walls to come up and stop her from allowing Peter to enter her heart. The conflict with Peter versus the two families jump off the page, allowing the readers to wonder what side will Peter actually align with. This story fits well in with all the other continuing characters of Deep Haven. I honestly can't wait to see what others stories come out about the widely popular Deep Haven characters.
